I put aside my admiration for the recognized Arthurian legends and appreciate this as an alternate-reality version of the mythos. He has a knack for mixing flowers and bees with mud and shit, and much like Eddison's The Worm Ouroborous, I enjoy simply reading his paragraphs. I also like his technique of using very short paragrah-chapters, which lend to the dream-sensory feel of parts of his stories. While I'm not that impressed with Parsival's evolution from innocent hero to cynical warrior, I like the way Monaco manages the naive boy (and I don't consider his first semi-sexual meeting 'revolting' - Jeschute wasn't complaining!). I loved the character Percival in Arthurian Legend, I even really enjoyed Arthur Rex which has a similar cynicism. But I feel like Monaco really has a chip on his shoulder--even to the point of hating all of his characters except Broaditch. I dunno, I will read all three, but only to finish what I started, not because I'm enchanted.fugitivesoulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09279524132884774198noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3192894932186742086.post-11349579188280076372010-05-29T12:49:49.513-07:002010-05-29T12:49:49.513-07:00Agreed in almost every detail. I bought both this, and the sequel (there's a third volume) but I'm not at all sure I want to read more descriptions of suffering and death.Hrothgleasnoreply@blogger.com
